THE ANZAC SPIRIT
APRIL 25 is a day when this nation honours those who served and are serving and says Thank You to all who have stepped up to ensure our ongoing freedom.
In DH's family, there is a strong tradition of military service. War is not viewed as a glorious thing but there is a belief in doing what is needed and if that involves serving one's country, then so be it.
Over many years, Gordon and I always went to the march in Melbourne to support Gordon's Dad who marched. Today will be a little different as we think of our own hero who won't be there.
A search of the Australian War Memorial Archives found that Gordon's Grandfather's Army record was available on line. His record runs to 14 pages and provides a fascinating insight on the history of a man who never spoke of his experiences. He enlisted in the 23 Battalion AIF in 1916 and was wounded in action in France in 1917.
